India’s middle-order plans have been thrown into disarray on the eve of the home series as star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant is officially out.
In a crushing development for Indian cricket fans, Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, which kicks off today, January 11, 2026. What was meant to be a high-stakes series for Pant to cement his place in the 50-over format has instead turned into another unfortunate medical setback.
The incident occurred during an optional practice session at the Baroda Cricket Association Stadium in Vadodara. While facing high-speed deliveries from a throwdown specialist, Pant was struck by a ball just above the waist on his right side.
Medical assessments and scans have since confirmed a right-sided strain with an internal oblique muscle tear. Reports indicate that Pant was seen in significant pain and had to be assisted off the field by the medical staff and head coach Gautam Gambhir.
A Frustrating Road for the Maverick
This injury comes at a particularly difficult time for the 28-year-old. After his miraculous return to cricket following a life-threatening car accident in 2022, Pant has been fighting to regain his rhythm in the white-ball formats.
Recent Form: He had recently led Delhi in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, showing glimpses of his classic self with two half-centuries.
Selection Scrutiny: Despite rumors that he might be dropped due to inconsistent ODI numbers, the selection committee had shown faith by retaining him as the backup keeper to KL Rahul.
Now, instead of taking the field in Vadodara, Rajkot, or Indore, Pant will travel to the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru for rehabilitation.
With Pant sidelined, the door has swung wide open for other contenders. While KL Rahul remains the primary choice behind the stumps, the team needs a secondary option.
Who Steps In?
Leading the race for the replacement spot are:
Ishan Kishan: Currently in "red-hot" form in domestic cricket and already a part of the T20 setup.
Dhruv Jurel: A rising star who has impressed in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and offers a solid middle-order presence.
Looking Ahead
The series against the BlackCaps is a vital testing ground for India’s strategy heading into a busy 2026 calendar. Losing a match-winner like Pant is a blow to the team's "X-factor," but it provides a golden opportunity for a newcomer to make a statement.
For Pant, the road to recovery begins again. Fans across the globe will be hoping this is a minor speed bump in what has already been an incredible story of resilience.

ReplyDeleteVery unfortunate.
ReplyDeleteHeartbreaking news! 💔 Pant was just getting his rhythm back. An oblique tear sounds painful. I really hope he recovers quickly. Who do you think should be the backup keeper now? I feel like Ishan Kishan deserves a shot given his form!
